Feed Lake Highlands is....

A faith-based program that feeds the body, mind, and soul of Lake Highlands residents who live on fixed, limited, or low incomes.

Our programs go beyond just addressing physical hunger. We take a holistic approach in all our programs. Through our food distribution program, EPIC After School Club, and Summer Camp Experiences, we develop long-term relationships with Lake Highlands area families, elderly residents living in public housing, and in the 12 multi-housing communities that are situated within the Whitehurst Corridor.

We are a program of the New Room Community Center, Inc., a charitable 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that ministers with families to address their physical, educational, and spiritual needs.

Our Story

In May 2007, The New Room Church and Community Center were established as an outreach of Lake Highlands United Methodist Church to serve those living in the apartment communities along the Whitehurst Corridor and beyond. The New Room’s ministry to grow God’s kingdom and build relationships flourished as people gathered together to worship. Through these growing relationships, we came face to face with the poverty and food insecurity in our community, among our neighbors and new friends. Many were hungry for material possessions, physical food, resources, relationships, educational support, and hope! Our eyes were opened and our hearts were enlarged.

Feed Lake Highlands was born and began food distribution in February 2012 directly in response to God’s call to care for our marginalized neighbors with a need for assistance with food and other resources. We served 15 families on that first distribution day. Our non-profit status was granted in April of 2012, and, since that time, hundreds of families have been served because of the generosity of supporters, volunteers, and team members. Clothes, household items, and furniture are also offered to program members at no charge.

Feed LH exists to feed the body, mind, and spirit of our neighbors who hunger for more. From the beginning, our hope has been to develop relationships with our program members and to play a role in empowering families to thrive.

What We Do

Feed the Body

Food insecurity has a ripple effect in our community, the impact of which is felt well beyond the person experiencing the pangs of hunger.

Feed the Mind

Our after-school program helps kids learn about scripture in a fun and interactive way. It also reinforces basic learning fundamentals and prepares students for success in the classroom.

Feed the Spirit

Our summer camp experiences provide students living in difficult circumstances a safe, accepting and empowering space where they can experience unconditional love.
